How to describe Atlus's Shin Megami Tensei series...

Well, in its most straightforward form, the series is based on Digital Devil Story, a science fiction novel series by Aya Nishitani. The games are generally standalone (although this one is a sequel), and deal with grim, mature subject matter (doesn't get much grimmer than the apocalypse). Oh, and they're RPGs.

All of which brings us to Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. The game takes place in post-apocalyptic Tokyo, in the year 203X. I won't go into the story - the stories of the Shin Megami Tensei games are hugely complicated but also half the fun - but suffice to say it's as gripping, dramatic and downright ridiculous as you'd expect.

The gameplay is superb, with engaging combat and satisfying exploration, and the graphics are gorgeous too, managing to find beauty in the world following an apocalypse.
