10 Best No.5's In Gaming History
5. Tekken 5
Tekken 4 was one of the PS2's first major disappointments. After the genre-defining brilliance of Tekken 3, Tekken 4 was a downgrade in many ways. The combat was weak and floaty, the decision to include uneven terrain in the game's stages caused more frustration than fun, and the final boss was an old man in a nappy.
Fortunately, Tekken's developers took the criticism on the chin and created a sequel that delivered one hell of a knockout blow to fans' complaints.
When we think of Tekken 5, the first word that springs to mind is "crunchy". Every blow has a real weight and heft to it, making each fight feel like a martial arts epic in miniature. Whether playing as a delinquent schoolgirl or a muscular wrestling god, combat feels satisfyingly meaty, hard-hitting, and again, crunchy.
Tekken 5 also introduced the series' now-iconic character customization - a feature so popular that damn near every fighting game since has allowed gamers to dress up their faves in the most outrageous drip since WWE's Seth Rollins.
Which neatly encapsulates Tekken's enduring appeal. Its mixture of flashy combat and ludicrous spectacle have won it a place in the hearts of millions of fighting fans, and Tekken 5 is as good as the series has ever been.
