Okay, so there will be plenty of people quick to point out that Axiom Verge was published by Sony Computer Entertainment, but the fact that it was developed by one single human being should earn it some serious indie points in anyone's book. Assembled by one Tom Happ of Thomas Happ Games, Axiom Verge is a Metroid-style platformer in which you traverse and explore beautifully designed sci-fi environments, solving puzzles and eviscerating aliens. The 60+ weapons and abilities on offer are imaginative, and include the Glitch Gun which turns enemies into inert blocks, and an ability that lets you send in aliens to scout out the area ahead of you. As you pick up these new abilities, you can track back, clearing new pathways and discovering secret areas that were inaccessible before. The 10-hour campaign takes you through a variety of environments, from pulsating alien hives to surreal snowy exteriors, and the tough boss encounters will give you incredibly memorable headaches that only the most rewarding of encounters can.
