8. Police Quest II: The Vengeance

The Adventure:

Released in the throes of Sierra's late eighties golden age, this sequel sees Cali cop, Sonny Bonds, going head to head (again) with unrelenting villain, Jesse Bains, in a thrilling battle of wills. As was the norm at the time for Sierra titles, players guided Sonny by way of typed commands while using the keyboard or mouse for movement. The fictional town of Lytton was Sonny's proving ground, and featured a number of locales for him to conduct his investigations, all reachable by him firing up his trusty ride and taking a drive. Game designer and former cop Jim Walls helped craft a game that is as procedural as they come, where the seemingly mundane - loafing at the girlfriend's house, tapping away on the computer at the station - leads on to big action moments. At almost thirty years old, this remains the most realistic police sim of all time.

Puzzling Par Excellence:

Hitching a plane to Steelton, Texas, Bonds encounters some nefarious Middle Eastern gents. This requires some quick action as you dispatch these foes and rifle through their turbans to find bomb schematics. Said bomb is on the plane, and for this puzzle players need to apply some backward thinking €“ i.e. do the exact opposite on the plans €“ to deactivate the bomb in the bathroom. Phew.
