1. Gastly/Haunter/Gengar

Type(s): Ghost/Poison.

Location(s): Pokémon Tower (Gastly/Haunter).

The Pokémon of the Gastly evolutionary line are the only Pokémon with the Ghost typing in Generation 1. The Ghost typing has always been very strong due to it being immune to both Normal type moves and Fighting type moves. Gengar is very similar to Alakazam, having the third highest special stat of 130 behind Alakazam’s 135. Haunter also only evolves into Genger via trading.

While Gengar doesn’t gain access to many moves by level up, it does gain access to the powerful move ‘Night Shade’. This move does damage to the opponent equal to the attacking Pokémon’s level, meaning the damage will scale with Gengar. The Ghost typing is a great asset to Gengar, as the only type Ghost is weak to in Generation 1 is the Ghost type itself.

Both Gastly and Haunter gain access to the same moveset as Gengar, allowing them to be trained much easier than Abra. Unfortunately, Gengar doesn’t have access to any Poison type attacks to make use of its Poison typing. However, Gengar does gains access to powerful TM moves like ‘Thunderbolt’ and ‘Psychic’ to make use of its high Special stat, as well as ‘Mega Drain’ to help conserve your health in battle.
