10 Best PS2 Games Of All Time
7. Burnout 3: Takedown
This entry was one of the most difficult on this list, due to its fierce competition with Need For Speed Underground 2, which has absolutely earned an honourable mention for its customisation, mechanics and soundtrack. That being said, Burnout 3: Takedown takes the cake here as it’s an indisputable masterpiece.
Here we had a game that didn’t just allow for reckless driving; it actively encouraged it. As the title suggests, races relied on you to “take down” your opponents by any means necessary. This task was typically completed by shunting said opponent into walls, bollards, or oncoming traffic. Causing crashes in such a fashion would fill a boost meter that allowed you to tear ahead of your fellow racers.
Crashing your own car played a huge part in Burnout 3 as well. High scores were offered for destruction and the game included challenges based purely on crashing and destroying the environment. The crème de la crème was the fact that you could control the direction of your flaming wreck in mid-air, ensuring as much devastation as possible.
The reason for Burnout 3’s success was simply the fact that it was stupidly fun. There was no time for painstaking realism; just crashes- oh so many crashes
