10 Best Spectacle Fighter Video Games Of All Time

8. Devil May Cry

DEVIL MAY CRY
Capcom

Onto the game that showed the world just how to do over-the-top action in a way we'd never seen before.

Written and directed by action game royalty Hideki Kamiya, he was clearly fancying a break away from the likes of Resident Evil 2, and designed Devil May Cry as the antithesis to the slow-burn survival horror he'd penned beforehand. Here we had the albino-haired demon-hunter Dante coming complete with the ability to transform into a super-powered devil form, a sword he could survive being impaled with, and a sense of swagger that carried into insulting otherwise intimidating bosses straight to their face.

The world was not ready for Devil May Cry, and from the opening scene where Dante stops a motorcycle in mid-air with a flurry of pistol shots, to the various sword-on-sword clashes with hulking fighter Nelo Angelo, there's a mix of gothic atmosphere with Dante's genuine "No worries, I got this" attitude, that makes the whole thing loveable to this day.
