An equally haunting and beautiful title that’s likely went straight under your radar, Detention is an indie Taiwanese game from developer Red Candles that shows players just how scary school can be.

Set in 1960s Taiwan during a period of martial law known as The White Terror, this visually-striking 2D side-scrolling horror sees players take on the role of two teenagers, Wei and Ray, who find themselves trapped in their school during a typhoon. With their means of escape cut off by strange supernatural events, the pair soon discover that their school has become inhabited by ghostly creatures known as “lingered” as reality shifts in a nightmarish direction.

The gameplay itself is as straightforward as it gets: search rooms for key items and clues needed to solve puzzles to progress while holding your breath to avoid being detected by the genuinely unsettling ghosts.

Unlike other teen horrors, though, Detention is a lot more provocative than horny teens in perilous situations. Delving deep into themes of redemption, the afterlife, Buddhism, and other elements of Taiwanese culture, Detention delivers a powerfully emotive narrative that acts as a poignant reflection of its setting.
