Vampyr is an excellent game for those who have a deep love of the macabre lore behind these blood-sucking creatures.

While it certainly has its flaws - like long loading screens and sloppy mechanics - the game lovingly sends up to classic depictions of vampires whilst adding some new spins to the mythology through the focus on the Spanish Flu pandemic. One such way that it genuinely grabs your attention is in the lead playable character Dr Johnathan Reid.

This protagonist gets sucked into the world of Vampyr through unfortunate circumstances, and it's easy to fall for him. You get truly caught up in the tragedy of his situation, as the ironic twist of him being a doctor who also feeds on the living is a striking juxtaposition.

He's constantly conflicted, and this is especially exacerbated by the tragic mistake he makes in the early stages of the game after accidentally killing his sister in a bloodlust.

Unlike many other vampiric beasts, Johnathan feels like he has a heart, as even the lowliest of lives still means something to him, which makes his feedings all the more dramatic. This character development carries the game and creates a truly complex protagonist.
