8. Fourth-Wall Breaking Menu Screens (Detroit: Become Human)
Detroit: Become Human is a very weird game, but by far its most unsettling moments come, surprisingly enough, in the main menu. Every time you boot the title up you're greeted by a Chloe android, who initially appears to be nothing more than a character to give the intro a little bit of flair.
As you play through the campaign though, and keep returning to the start menu to continue, Chloe actually becomes self-aware. Where previously she'd repeat canned dialogue, she proceeds to actually speak to the player in totally-missable scenes, asking them about their opinions on robotic life and even giving them a survey to fill in.
It's suitably creepy, and plays into the themes of the game perfectly, making you think whether or not this face you had taken for granted and seen as nothing other than part of the scenery is actually "alive". Once you finish the game you're even given a final choice: free Chloe from her confines (and thus banish her from the menu screen forever), or tell her to stay and do her job.
