10 Best Video Game Sequels Of All Time
8. Batman: Arkham City
Rocksteady's Batman debut could have gone a different route: it could have bombed, much like most superhero games have over the years. But thankfully, Rocksteady paid tribute to the source and did it justice. Like Batman does, fittingly.
However, in terms of scale, it was small. Arkham Island is, well, that: a small, isolated area. So for a sequel, Rocksteady needed to go big. And they did, by moving to the city.
Arkham City, to be precise, is a violent playground for Batman to explore and keep in line. Distinct districts add variety and life, rather than copy/pasted areas. Exploration and going off the beaten track was rewarded, with Batman's rogue's gallery getting some air time.
Traversal was improved on, new skills and gadgets became available, as well as that not-patented Batman Combat being just as addictive with new moves. As were the boss battles, adding variety and flair to proceedings. Take Mr. Freeze's fight in New Game+, for creativity.
As for the story, it's pure comic book. But that's not slander, it's a compliment to Rocksteady keeping it faithful, as well as giving Joker a better ending than the one in Asylum.
