Credit to Hideo Kojima on this one: he certainly played the long game with his Metal Gear series. Breaking into the mainstream with 1998's Solid, the next leap to the PlayStation 2 saw Sons of Liberty sell millions. And whilst it was deserved, it was a sign of things to come with the story.

So when the next main game, Snake Eater, was announced as a prequel, fans were wondering where Kojima was going with it. Fortunately, many questions about the present story were answered, with the origins of so much being laid out in this Cold War epic.

But story alone cannot make a game great, which is why the gameplay make it a tour de force of Metal Gear action. Refined stealth mechanics and a camouflage system made for a cracking experience, as did Kojima's attention to detail that players wouldn't notice the first time around.

It might sound like an oxymoron, but the story is crazy yet grounded. One moment, discussing the geopolitical climate and imminent threat of nuclear war, the next Snake's being caught out by being groped.

Yup, that's Metal Gear Solid 3 alright.
