10 Best Video Game Sequels That NEVER Happened
8. Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes
Creating a fan game is, strangely, even more fraught with danger than creating a licensed sequel. Even if you don't intend to sell the game, you can still be considered to be infringing the copyrights of the franchise you are utilising - like, for example, Pokémon Prism being handed a cease and desist by Nintendo.
A similar scenario occurred with the ambitious Chrono Trigger sequel Crimson Echoes. Fans intended to create it as a mid-point between Chrono Trigger and the legitimate sequel, Chrono Cross.
Volunteers worked tirelessly on the game, and - an astounding five years later - were almost finished totally developing it. Then, in a cruel twist of fate, Square Enix issued these creators with a cease and desist of their own, mere weeks before the completed project was to be released into the wild.
Paradoxically, versions of the game can still be found on the internet - although it's unclear exactly how, since an almost fully finished version of Crimson Echoes can still be found on some strange corners if you look for it.
