4. DOOM

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum from a game like ABZÛ is DOOM, which features less ethereal ocean life and more the very antithesis of life: hellish demons intent on effing players up in whatever way they can.

DOOM's music skilfully reflects this preference, but that doesn't make it any less incredible. Tearing through DOOM with a massive shotgun and a chainsaw, gibbing enemies in innumerable brutal fashions, is enormously satisfying, and the heavy music is just the magma rock on top of the dirty great lava cake.

Mick Gordon is the man responsible for the music, having composed a host of other titles in the last decade like Killer Instinct (Season One and Two), Wolfenstein: The New Order and The Last Airbender.

DOOM's music is like something played by an industrial metal band, and the occasional burst of choral vocals makes blasting demons feel like something of a religious experience.
