10 Best Video Games Levels Of 2018 (So Far)
9. Your Awakening (Vampyr)
Vampyr wasn't a perfect game (many would argue that it wasn't even all that good), but it did have flashes of brilliance, primarily in its atmospheric setting and brilliant opening level.
Awakening in a pit of corpses, unknown to him why or how, your character, Johnathan Reid, wanders through the streets fuelled only by the lust for blood. A newly created vampire, you control the anti-hero as he makes his first kill, realises what he's done and fights his way to freedom to slip back into society.
Not only is it a great way to establish the game's mechanics by matching them up with the disorientation of vampirism, but the level's presentation style is reflective of everything Vampyr does well, gaining a distinct identity and atmosphere despite obvious flaws.
There's a real vision driving the title during sections like this, and even when the technical aspects themselves don't quite cut it, the title manages to be far more compelling than the sum of its parts.
