10 Best Video Games Levels Of 2018 (So Far)
6. Pestilence (Kingdom Come: Deliverance)
From the very first level it's apparent that Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an uncompromising game that doesn't care whether you prosper or wilt in its sandbox, but no quest sums up the title's approach to player agency and consequences quite like Pestilence.
While exploring Merhojed, players are told that a mysterious plague is in the process of killing a large number of the population. With time running out and desperation setting in, main character Henry is tasked with coming up with a cure, starting a process where the player is sent out to inspect the symptoms of sufferers and concoct some medicine. Essentially, you've got to take on the role of a real doctor for an hour.
Where other games would handily point you towards the direction of the right ingredients, here you have to read books, consult specialists and use your own intuition to come up with the right cure. Keeping the pressure on, getting the wrong ingredients can do more harm than good, all the while the clock is ticking down, and people can die while you're deliberating whether or not your recipe is correct.
It's a brilliantly tense section, and is a testament to how much Kingdom Come achieves away from the standard action game formula.
