10 Best Video Games Set In England
4. The Getaway
A title taken straight from the golden age of gaming, The Getaway was developed by Team Soho exclusively for the PS2 and was released all the way back in 2002. Initially planned as a launch title for the console, the game became one of the most costly titles for its day and would be delayed for a mammoth 27 months.
The drain on time and resources in bringing the real-world locations of modern-day London in glorious early-2000s high definition was something unprecedented for the video game industry, but the end results sure are hard to argue against.
The game revolves around the stories of an ex-bank robber named Mark Hammond and a police constable named Frank Carter, both of whom can free roam around the inner city and immerse themselves in the goings-on around them. This liveliness is something Team Soho specifically targeted during production, attempting to create a 'movie-like' experience by removing HUDs and making each and every location as recognisable as possible.
Releasing right as the Grand Theft Auto series was taking the gaming world by storm, The Getaway famously didn't perform as well financially as its rave reviews at the time probably should have suggested.
Nevertheless, it did spawn two sequel games as follow ups and has thankfully enjoyed a resurgence in popularity post-PS2 as a truly underrated gem.
