10 Best Video Games We Never Got
6. Super Mario 64 2
Super Mario 64 is a defining point in gaming history, and speculation over a possible sequel remains one of the most talked about topics in the industry.
Because hardly anything is known about the game, it's proven to be the number-one source of some major conspiracy theories from the Nintendo faithful over the years.
The big gimmick allegedly around Super Mario 64's sequel would have been the inclusion of multiplayer, with Luigi possibly being playable across a set of new open worlds, accessible in the same manner as the original.
New power-ups, a specific multiplayer game mode, and a rideable Yoshi were all other features that were rumoured to be in development for the game. 'Super Mario 64 2' was intended to release on the Nintendo 64DD sometime around 1999, but the commercial failure of the product meant that it was scrapped with just one stage being developed.
There were rumours that Super Mario 128 was lining up to be a sequel to Super Mario 64, however that was later shown to be a simple tech demo later used on games like Pikmin. So, whilst the likes of Sunshine, Galaxy and Odyssey especially have plenty of tie-ins to the 1996 classic, gamers are still unlikely to ever get a true Nintendo-made Super Mario 64 follow-up.
