3. Open-World Iron Man Game

Iron Man is arguably the face of the Marvel juggernaut but, even on the back of Robert Downey Jr's iconic performances, his appearances in the world of gaming have been fairly sparse.

But, this could have all been very different.

Turns out, between 2010 and 2012, Avalanche Studios - developers behind the Just Cause series - were working on an open-world Iron Man game. According to Avalanche's co-founder, Christofer Sundberg, the game would have seen players be able to "take off and just fly anywhere", before the project was ultimately pulled by Disney and Marvel.

A fan-made teaser from August 2022 using Unreal Engine 5 showed Iron Man flying about in his Mk 1 suit, with Downey Jr's likeness being used for Tony Stark. The flying mechanics look incredible in theory, and there's no doubt Avalanche would have delivered another vibrant and expansive open world for players to navigate through.

Sadly, the nearest we got was Just Cause 3 and 4's weaponised jetpack expansions, coming from Avalanche years later and playing very much like the Iron Man game the team have described.
