Platinum Games' debut title for Wii U plays a lot like Pikmin but with a twist - instead of controlling 100 weird little creatures, the player controls an army of superheroes that can join together to form anything from bridges, to giant swords and guns. It's a really cool concept, but sadly its execution is a little bit flawed, with players having to draw shapes on the GamePad's screen (or alternatively, use the analog stick) to make the plucky group of heroes transform. It works decently enough with basic shapes (a line for a sword, for example), but trying to draw a bomb with a fuse in the middle of an incredibly tough boss fight is about as easy and painful as tap-dancing on a floor full of plugs. A few touch buttons for every weapon would have been a lot more user-friendly. Still, The Wonderful 101 makes up for its control shortcomings by being full of game references (including the awesome NES classic Punchout) and having the charm of a Saturday morning cartoon. If that wasn't enough, there's a boss fight roughly every 30 seconds (that might be a slight exaggeration) and they're all really, really epic.
