2. Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway

Battlefield 1942

On the surface, Brothers in Arms might look like yet another Call of Duty or Medal of Honour rip off, but it's far more sophisticated than either. Still being an action-packed first-person shooter at heart, there's a vaster array of tactical options to play around with that trump straight running and gunning.

In charge of different fire teams, the game swaps into a third-person view while in cover, allowing you to get a more tactical view of the combat area. Ordering suppressing fire on hunkered down enemies in order to close in on them, there's an engrossingly methodical flow to combat in all of the Brothers in Arms games that's sadly missing from first-person shooters today.

Likewise, the title put a far bigger focus on story and characters than other WW2 releases. Instead of trying to capture the grandeur and the scale of the conflict, Hell's Highway instead put the focus on the adventures of a tight-knit platoon and their fight for survival. It was essentially Band of Brothers: The Game, and was all the better for it.
