5. Mortal Kombat X Fails The Next Generation

As the tenth mainline MK game and the follow-up to the 2011 soft reboot, Mortal Kombat X was responsible for carrying the series through to the next generation. Did it succeed? Yeah, it did! But there was one thing it could have done better.

The game sought to push the series forward by introducing second-generation characters. Sadly, of the four they introduced, only one (Cassie Cage) managed to make a stir and go on to become a fan favourite.

There was Jacqui Briggs (daughter of Jax Briggs), a generic snore fest, Takeda (Kenshi's son), who had cool weapons and moves but was also as bland as plain toast, and then, worst of all, Kung Jin.

This character (a relative of Kung Lao) had a unique bow-based fighting style and was the first LGBTQ character in the series, giving him plenty of extraordinary potential. Yet, it was all wasted as he was dull at best and whiny/annoying at worst.

Botching these characters was a big mishap, with only Cassie and Jacqui coming back for the sequel. Thankfully, X did pick up the slack with some non-multi-generational additions (like Kotal Kahn, Erron Black and D'Vorah). Still, it was a shame to see these legacy characters flop.
