Being a Sonic the Hedgehog fan is like having stomach trouble. It's nothing to be ashamed of, yet you'd still rather keep it to yourself.

The series has felt cursed for a while now, with countless titles that have dragged the character's name through the mud. The future is also looking bleak as Sonic Frontiers is showing all the signs of yet another flop for the formerly iconic Sega mascot. Of course, all of the franchise's worst qualities can also be found in its ventures into fighting games.

Its biggest fighting game was the 1996 title Sonic the Fighters, which was alright for the time, but has aged about as well as a milk carton left in the sun. What makes this worse is that there's a bright shining light for Sonic fighter games, and it comes in the form of a fan-made title.

Sonic Smackdown is a free-to-play fighting game that's so smooth, stylish and polished that it's shocking to believe it's not an official release. The roster is full, the backgrounds are luscious, and the cartoonish art style blends perfectly with the series. It's a game so good that it makes you deeply wish it had the publishing power of Sega behind it.
