10 Biggest Video Game Disappointments Of The Generation
6. Sea Of Thieves
Everyone was excited for the return of Rare! The studio that created Banjo Kazooie, Battle Toads, and Conkers Bad Fur Day was back making a big game for console.
There were two things we didn't consider though; the team at Rare is not the same as it was 20 years ago, and, unless you're Nintendo, cartoony AAA games are not in vogue. Rare created a family-friendly pirate MMO and, while it's charming, the game was completely devoid of things to do. Somehow the curse of the console MMO continues to move forward without developers learning there needs to be more.
What people don't realise is that Sea of Thieves is, in every way, a Rare game: charming characters, pleasant art-style, bare-bones story, and simple gameplay, except it was an MMO and featured no trademark collectables. The problem then, is that a Rare game in 2018 is not all that appealing. It's no fault of the developers, they were led to believe people wanted exactly what they used to make, but in reality it was a case of rose-tinted glasses for a bygone era.
