10 Biggest Video Game Disappointments Of The Generation
4. No Man's Sky
Ahh No Man's Sky, how you hurt us. In hindsight, we can only really blame ourselves for the hype around No Man's Sky - well, ourselves and Sony. We were led to believe via marketing that No Man's Sky would be an epic sci-fi adventure of space battles, alien trading, and interplanetary exploration.
On our end of things, we should have taken Sean Murray's reluctance to answer questions and the scale of the game compared to that of the team making it, and realised Hello Games was over-promising.
Regardless, No Man's Sky was a far, far cry from the game we witnessed in trailers when it launched in 2016. The game was as big as promised, but it was just about completely empty, repetitive, and devoid of cool things like dinosaurs! As such the backlash was swift and strong. So much so, that Hello Games went completely silent and people predicted their immediate doom. That didn't happen, but the game did seriously damage the developer's reputation.
It's worth pointing out that No Man's Sky is now a good game, thanks to years of free updates from Hello Games, but that doesn't change the fact that it was a mighty disappointment upon release!
