10 Biggest Video Game Disappointments Of The Generation
3. Star Wars Battlefront II
EA almost single-handedly killed the concept of loot boxes and micro-transactions with Star Wars Battlefront II. And that's a real testament to just how awfully predatory the games design was. Not only that, but the actual game itself wasn't very good, and the main story was a joke. So yes, this one was a pretty big disappointment.
EA completely oversold Battlefront II; with the publisher promising it had listened to the complaints of the first game, and included a big story in the sequel. What we ended up with however, was a jaw-droppingly bad story that shoe-horned in sections with Luke Skywalker and co. for no discernible reason.
That would have been bad enough, but the awful story was totally overshadowed by the micro-transactions debacle. EA and developer DICE designed Battlefront II's multi-player to be such a grind that players felt compelled to spend real-life money to buy characters like Darth Vader.
It was a shameless cash-grab that showed gamers wouldn't just lay down and take a beating.
