10 Bleak Game Over Screens That Crushed You
6. Metroid Prime: Trilogy
As one of Nintendo's most iconic franchises, Metroid has always maintained high popularity. Its 2D outings on the NES and SNES created some of the finest side-scrolling action on both platforms.
Once the series arrived in the third dimension with Metroid Prime, the franchise was upgraded in every way. Thanks to its immersive qualities and utmost respect for Metroid's focus on exploration and discovery, Retro Studios had taken the series to the next level. Through much of the 2000s, this new take would go from strength.
Exploring the reaches of Talon IV, Aether and the wider galaxy respectively, players were treated to a dazzling series of first-person adventures. Of course, being in this perspective, the death sequences also rose to the occasion, pulling the player in to a much more intimate degree. It's certainly a lot more personal than watching the bounty hunter pop out of her suit on a 2D plane.
Following the shattering of Samus's suit, you'll hear her vital signs reach critical levels and finally cease. The player gets to bear witness to her life slowly ebbing out across the entire trilogy. It varies between games with Echoes showing the bounty hunter overwhelmed by the darkness and the Corruption seeing Samus destroyed by the Phazon coursing through her.
