1. Guitar Hero

Now, there is a very serious argument to be had about which was the best Guitar Hero. Though 3 is typically revered as the best and was undoubtedly the apex of the genre's popularity, nothing will ever match the revolutionary sensation of picking up that tacky plastic SG from Guitar Hero 1.

Guitar Hero released very late in the PS2 life-cycle in 2005 but gave birth to one of the most addictive and landscape-altering gameplay loops. The physical guitar is a peripheral that, unlike other peripherals of the past, managed to enhance a game experience rather than hinder it.

Picking up that guitar and tapping your way through "I Love Rock And Roll" on easy-mode made you instantly feel like a rock god.

Not only was the gameplay loop hugely rewarding, it was further improved by the track list, which was a mesmerising tour through rock, metal and punk. Songs from Black Sabbeth, Ziggy Stardust, Bad Religion, Blue Öyster Cult and many many more provided both a musical masterclass for kids and a rewarding trip through nostalgia for adults.

Getting a group of mates together on the weekend and challenging each other to get the highest score on different tracks was the cornerstone of weekends. The PS2 at the height of innovation.
