8. Burnout 3: Takedown
Long before being tied down to the Need For Speed franchise, Criterion was working with publisher EA on the seminal arcade racer Burnout 3: Takedown.
In a landscape dominated by the wacky kart racers of Mario Kart: Double Dash and Crash Nitro Kart, or simulators the likes of Gran Turismo 3, Burnout 3 managed to comfortably blend excellent racing mechanics alongside the more bizarre game mode and objective. The mode that showed the world Burnout 3 was spectacular was Road Rage.
Choosing your favourite car, listening to that amazing soundtrack from the likes of Rise Against, The Futureheads and Jimmy Eat World and just smashing the living hell out of anyone that dare get into your way was not only a massive form of catharsis. It also lead to spectacular crash animations, that made you feel every bump and scratch you both delivered and received.
Sitting around with your friends, passing the controller around to see who could get the best score or nail the best wipeout kept kids and adults alike entertained for hours on end.
