10 Brilliant Video Games Buried Under TERRIBLE Mechanics

7. Fallout 4 - Dialogue Tree

There once was a time when the Fallout franchise was a lot more than just another basic post apocalyptic adventure. Before bugs, poor quest design, and whatever the *hell* Fallout 76 was.

While this was long before Fallout 4 most players see this entry as being when the series truly took it's final turn into the inevitable failure that it is today. However underneath all of the poor choices, (no Preston I do not want to help another settlement,) there's actually a rather competent and fun game.

Apart from the dialogue tree of course, that can go to hell.

In a game that totes player choice and multiple branching narratives Fallout 4 sure does a bad job of presenting it in the dialogue. Essentially all options amount to, accept, reject, get angry, and sarcastic - in that order. And even then a lot of the big decisions don't matter. Whatever the player picks the game will railroad them into exactly where it wants them to be at the end of a conversation.

It doesn't help that the entire process is marred by the recent video game trend of shortening the response options to one word placeholders, especially when they don't convey the tone of the response.

Bring back full sentences in RPG's damn it.
