10 Brilliant Video Games Buried Under TERRIBLE Mechanics
5. Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Real-Time Combat
Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a game that, unsurprisingly, is based on one of the pinnacles of Table Top Role Playing systems, Paizo's Pathfinder.
As such the game makes use of a huge variety of abilities, classes, races, and equipment in a much more streamlined way. No more looking over 20 pages of notes just to find out what the hell that new magic sword you picked up does.
The problem comes however in the fact that you game tries to do it all at the same time. Cue combat scenarios where a dozen numbers appear at once, multiple sound effects play, and all of a sudden your entire party has been killed. All because the game runs in real time.
The system Pathfinder: Kingmaker is based on does things in steps, running a turn based combat system so players can keep up. Try to do all of that in real time and you end up with one of the most stressful combat games you'll ever play.
And it is a shame because past that Pathfinder Kingmaker is a fantastic homage to games like Baldur's Gate, with a riveting story, excellent design, and well written characters. And most players won't get past the tutorial due to the stress of the combat.
At least there's mods that can fix it.
