10 Brilliantly Written Characters Ruined By Game Mechanics
7. Destroyer - Borderlands
The Destroyer is an interesting figure in the world of Borderlands.
It's a gargantuan Eldritch monster that was locked away by an ancient civilization and unknowingly released by the Vault Hunters. It is supposed to serve as an existential threat that raises the stakes in what is otherwise a lighthearted, if violent, story.
The cutscene that introduces the Destroyer really hypes the creature up to be the ultimate doom of reality, describing it as an immortal being that can only be temporarily stopped and locked away. If that was truly the case, the Destroyer would have been the best plot twist at the end of the game, but the problem is that the boss fight with the creature is just too easy.
Frustratingly easy.
The destroyer barely does anything throughout the fight, and the mechanic used to damage it is like something straight out of kindergarten. You need to shoot these massive purple sacs that are placed all over its body, and it would honestly be harder to miss them. The fight doesn't really take more than five minutes to finish.
Thankfully, the remastered version of Borderlands has improved the difficulty of the encounter and made the Destroyer's doomsday awakening slightly more believable.
