10 Brilliantly Written Characters Ruined By Game Mechanics

6. Hoyt Volker - Far Cry 3

Although Hoyt Volker was supposed to be the main antagonist of Far Cry 3, his spotlight was taken from him by Vaas in the first half of the game. This said, Volker could've still been a pretty good villain in the second act if it weren't for how poorly his final altercation with Jason was handled.

After all, just like Vaas, Hoyt had the perfect qualities to be an intimidating but intriguing adversary. He was equally psychotic and ruthless, but unlike Vaas, Hoyt had his eyes set on more than just the Rook Islands, which made him a more concerning threat as well as a more satisfying target to kill.

Unfortunately, the final confrontation with Hoyt was anything but satisfying. Though the poker scene preceding it was genuinely intense, the actual knife fight with Hoyt was an uninspired and laughably easy sequence of quick-time events that was over in less than two minutes. The fight was an absolute joke, and it really undermined Hoyt's status as the mastermind behind the pirate activity on the Islands.

It's a real shame, considering that Vaas had a whole drug-fuelled narrative sequence attached to his death. It just shows that the developers could've done better with Hoyt.
