Release Date: November 24, 1999

What Happened? After a highly troubled five-year development period, the game launched full of bugs, demanded an extremely powerful PC for the time and disregarded many of the story elements from previous games (which is a huge no-no when your lore is as deep and your fanbase as devoted as Ultima). Patches were released, but ultimately weren't satisfactory and only fixed some of the nagging issues. Developer Origin Systems ended up shutting down in 2004, at which point the game was abandoned.

Today: Though the game's failure killed the Ultima brand, some dedicated fans did continue to work on unofficially patching the game, with a project branded Ultima IX: The Reconstruction aiming to fix more bugs and even "repair" the story elements most Ultima fans took exception to. However, updates slowed down massively by 2012, and the game now seems to be pretty much cast out by even its most vocal fans.
