10 Canceled Open-World Games You Wish They Hadn't Killed

8. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Armada Of The Damned

The life of a pirate, as presented in Disney’s beloved movie franchise, looks super fun. It’s all yo ho, yo ho-ing, age-appropriate rum drinking and Johnny Depp hamming it up outrageously for the cameras. There’s nary an inkling of scurvy, starvation, keelhauling or any of the other horrors that afflicted real-life pirates.

Video games have tried to capture the spirit of pirating many times over the years. The likes of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Sea of Thieves have had some success in that area, but one title that never saw the light of day was Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned.

We’ve seen Pirates of the Caribbean games aplenty, but they’ve mostly been of the cheap cash-in variety; simple platformers and scrolling hack-and-slash titles. Armada of the Damned was set to be something different, an open-world ocean-faring adventure that could have had all franchise fans waving their rock solid, weevil-infested biscuits in the air in excitement. Trailers back at the time of E3 2010 certainly looked promising.

It was to be set before the events of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, tying into the franchise’s beginnings while offering all manner of RPG elements and satisfying combat to proceedings. This really could’ve been something special, if developer Propaganda Games hadn’t been forced to walk the plank.
