10 Changes PS4 Needs To Keep Ahead In The Console War
7. More Risks And New Blood
Unlike the launch lineups of past generations, the era of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One was kicked off by a tidal wave of sequels. In the past while there would always be at least one major title from a flagship series in any initial release, many were wholly original IPs. While a multitude of these often proved to be utter crud suffering from the problems of developing for new hardware, some would be successes. More importantly releasing these presented the feeling that companies were willing to attempt brand new IPs rather than sticking purely to their biggest successes. However, this seemed to die with the last generation - as the Playstation 4 was released to the public, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Need For Speed: Rivals, and countless other sequels were those most heavily promoted early on. As a result of this decision, the new generation lacked the feeling of fresh innovation and a willingness to attempt something new. Instead it was just carrying over elements from the last one, and this sense is continuing to plague consoles even months down the line. Its not just the franchises causing this either. Wolfenstein: The New Order was a barely upscaled version of what could be found on the Playstation 3 with little to offer for the higher price, and the same can be said for the likes of Assassin's Creed 4 and many others. While it hardly helps that attempts to create new series have ranged from mediocre to truly dire, the console needs new blood and less carry-overs in order to maintain its lead in the war. It needs to truly be presented to buyers as the Playstation 4, not the Playstation 3: Shinier Graphics Edition.
