10 Changes PS4 Needs To Keep Ahead In The Console War
6. Touchpad Browsing And Integration
As mentioned in this list's opening point, a primary feature of the Dualshock 4 was the addition of a touchpad. Occupying the space between both analogue sticks, it was intended to help overcome the obvious issues which have frequently plagued controllers, with slower reactions and lower accuracy in comparison to a mouse. While an excellent plan on paper, the reality has been somewhat different. While titles such as Trine 2 make excellent use of the touchpad for everything from firing a bow to pinpointing areas on a map, others display severe problems. Assassin's Creed 4 in particular was notably buggy on release, and attempting to scroll through menus was an uphill battle at the best of times, with slow responses and surprising inaccuracy. Even ignoring use within games, there is no option to use the touchpad for the internet browser nor scrolling through the Playstation Store; both areas the touchpad would be perfect for. While it's certainly heartening to know this is not a hardware issue, these are significant problems with the console. As a potentially revolutionary interface option for the entire generation, there is a vast amount of potential to be tapped here if only Sony could stop to truly use it. The company needs to stop treating it as a gimmick and support it as a truly reliable method of accessing whats on the screen.
