4. The Prince And Farah - Prince Of Persia

A short example, but a bold showing of self-awareness comes from Prince of Persia’s Farah. During a puzzle sequence within Sands of Time, where a player must climb a structure, moving sets of mirrors to bounce beams of light around the room, Farah goes off on a monologue. She talks absolute hogwash about reason, love, life and the humanity of it all.

“Of what use is reason against the power of love … so if you want to live, die in love. Die in love if you want to stay alive.”

The Prince then exclaims his distaste for such unsuited poetry during his puzzling time, claiming, “If you want to be useful, try finding a book that’ll tell us how to get out of here.," as he frantically pushes a mirror up against a wall. Her response breaks a small hole in the fourth wall, stating, “This isn’t that kind of game.” This reply confuses The Prince further, causing him to question his circumstances and just maybe, his very existence inside that of a video game.
