10 Classic Games That Wouldn't Be As Popular Today
Although this may seem unfair to critique games when they themselves will have help pave the way that video games have evolved and many of the aspects I have focused on were first being introduced in the games I have mentioned. Though, what I have tried to highlight here, is how much the industry has changed and how a gamer has changed. The more recent a person started playing games, the more narrow their vision is. They expect more, see more faults and need very specific things for a game to be good. The state that the industry is in now is suffocating gaming. Developers are not as willing to take risks, instead making more of the same, focusing on bigger set pieces and graphics instead of originality. The odd game gets released that seems to push the boundaries of gaming. It is these games that excite me. Games that take as many risks as the classic games, when developers didn't know what to make or who they were making it for. Games need to keep taking risks and pushing originality to its limits or the industry will stop evolving. Games like Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Gunstar Heroes would, to a current generation gamer, be laughed at and not even begin to compare to modern games. Even to a seasoned gamer, these games would be played, at least in part, only for nostalgic purposes. It is only when you played these games during their era can you appreciate the thought, time and ingenious ideas that went into constructing these games. Compared to modern games, they seem simple, rushed games, but when you played them in their limelight then you realise how amazing they truly are.
