10 Classic Survival Horror Video Games That Are Still Terrifying

7. Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis

Where the first two Resident Evil games relied more on atmosphere and sudden jolts to scare players into submission, this third entry decided to go all-out on white-knuckle action and the results are positively electrifying.

It certainly goes without saying, but Nemesis is one of gaming's most imposing villains. He will always show up at the worst possible time, and you have the choice to fight him or completely abandon whatever goal you were in search of and escape. You'll never truly be ready for him, and that lingering paranoia is what makes the game so enjoyable.

Even when Nemesis isn't getting all up in your business, there's still plenty of zombies, Hunters, and giant spiders to contend with, each of them deadly and terrifying in their own way.

The more action-heavy approach to gameplay does help to make you feel empowered, but the sheer volume of enemies that will accost you in tight areas manages to keep the tension high, and you'll often feel like you're barely scraping by.

Resident Evil purists may prefer the slower pace of previous entries, but the panic-inducing terror that this game offers is palpable and it's an experience you won't soon forget.
