Metroid broke a lot of ground when it was first released, but there was definitely room to improve. One of those areas was properly navigating the world, because Zebes in the original Metroid is one of the most confusing worlds on the NES.

One need only look at the remake of the planet in Zero Mission to see the night and day difference a few modern improvements on the Metroid formula make to an otherwise boring experience.

OG Zebes, on the other hand, was a confusing, repetitive, dreary-looking world filled with uninteresting enemies, and identical corridors. While being an NES game means that it isn't that big, you'll still find yourself getting turned around and going in the completely wrong direction more often than is tolerable.

While a lot of it can be forgiven for how experimental it was, and how they would improve on it in the future, Metroid's explorative world has not aged nearly as well as its predecessors have.
