4. Gorrister's Story - I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, by Harlan Ellison's own admission, was made with the express purpose of being a game you could not win. There is a "best" ending, but even that involves all the main characters dying after centuries of torture at the hands of a psychotic computer. Even then, you have to jump through a ton of hoops in order to get to that conclusion.

The worst offender of this is Gorrister, whose story is a different kind of getting lost than the rest of the entries on this list. This being a point-and-click adventure game with admittedly muddy graphics, seeing what you're supposed to click on next can be rather annoying. There's also the usual point-and-click trapping of the next step of the journey often being rather unclear to the player.

But also, even when you do manage to find your way around, if you know what you're getting into with this game, then you know one wrong dialogue choice can cost you the best ending. If you're too stubborn to look up a guide, have fun with constantly hesitating and second-guessing literally every choice you make in this story.
