You’d think that the Gouken story is one of those one-in-a-million situations, but there is actually another famous “hoax into reality” story with Ermac from Mortal Kombat.

Coincidentally, it also begins with a fake article from Electronic Gaming Monthly!

Ermac, the red ninja created by Shao Kahn, started off as an alleged glitch reported by everyone’s favorite lying magazine. The article that began his existence featured a photograph of Scorpion in a red outfit, which the article claimed was a palette swap glitch.

This, combined with a hidden maintenance menu in the arcade version called “ERMACS,” sparked the fantasy of many fans who began theorizing that Ermac, like Reptile, is a secret playable character and EGM has accidentally found a way to unlock him.

Throughout the following years, many players had tried to recreate the glitch without any success, which led most people concluding Ermac was actually a hoax.

Still, some remained devout believers in Ermac's existence, and the pressure they exuded upon Mortal Kombat’s creators eventually led to a playable reveal of the red ninja in Mortal Kombat 3.
