Although first appearing in Four Swords, it’s not until The Minish Cap (2004) that we learn of the terrible deeds that Rupee Wraiths are capable of committing. This is revealed by the dialogue of character Flurris, who confides in Link and says: “Nobody believes me, but I saw a ghost that has taken hold of Granddad!”.

The attack tactic performed by this foe consists on pursuing its victim without rest; once the prey is caught, the wraith proceeds to drain as many Rupees as possible from the hero’s wallet. A real nightmare when you’re saving up for a new shiny shield or a miraculous yet expensive potion.

Flurris’ granddad is named Gregal. If you decide to help him exorcise the Rupee Wraith, you’ll get a reward that will be worth your while, but only in the long run (no spoilers).

If you choose not to help, you’ll eventually hear news of Gregal’s condition worsening after you met him.

You'll learn that he inevitably died due to the growing deterioration caused by the wraith’s influence. Quite a reality check for everyone who thought they were playing a sugar-coated kids game.

That’s not how they roll in Hyrule, baby!
