4. Anna's House - Fallout 2

The Den and is a true hive of scum and villainy inside Fallout 2's distorted version of California. There are pickpockets everywhere, gangs fight constantly for control, and overall everyone is obviously miserable.

However, as the player explores the Den and finds Anna's House, they stumble upon something more terrifying than the suffering of innocent people, an actual ghost haunting its own house. Not only does Fallout 2 come with this surprising specter, but she also comes with her own sidequest that players can choose to complete.

The player can first encounter the ghost by talking to the local storyteller, the Great Ananias, who tells the player a story all about a fair princess being poisoned by a magician. The ghost can be found in the room next to the Great Ananias late at night. Anna doesn't do much besides hovering in place, asking for her lost locket.

This encounter triggers a side quest where the player can track down the raider who stole the ghost's locket, return the locket, and then have to bury the bones of the poor woman who died, finally giving her peace. Not only is this an interesting sidequest the player can miss, but it can also be a huge surprise to anyone who wants to play Fallout 2 expecting nothing more than their usual violence and post-apocalyptic realism.

Instead, stumbling upon an actual ghost in all its pixelated horror will make some wish they'd never ventured so far in the first place.
