At the outset of the 1998 point-and-click adventure game, Sanitarium, all you're supposed to know is that you are a patient in a mental hospital, covered in bandages, crossing over into various alternate worlds in an effort to solve the mystery of who you are.

One of these worlds is a small suburb populated entirely by malformed children, whose deformities include tumors, missing eyes, necrotic flesh, and so much more. They seem weirdly content in these forms and are all huge brats. When questioned about the whereabouts of all the adults, all they have to say is that "Mother" has forbidden them from talking about that.

Mother turns out to be a malevolent alien plant that arrived on a small comet, killed the adults, and is now slowly transforming the children into plant creatures like her. And, honestly, you kinda can't blame her.

When Mother first arrived, she befriended a young girl named Carol, revealing herself only to her. But Carol's father was abusive and, one horrible night, beat the poor girl to death. The town knew about this abuse and allowed it to happen.
