10 Criminally Underrated Video Games That Deserve A Second Chance
8. SOMA
Why it got overlooked:
SOMA is another example of a game that got excellent reviews and exceeded its sales targets, but fells short sales or recognition-wise of what it truly deserves.
When we think modern survival horror, we think Alien: Isolation or Outlast. SOMA just isn't talked about enough considering it's impressive writing, chilling atmosphere and horrifying enemies, and that is only because not enough people have played it yet.
Why it deserves a second chance:
The best way to describe SOMA is Alien: Isolation in BioShock's Rapture, with a little of the mystery of Gone Home. The run-and-hide mechanics - originally perfected by the same team when they created Amnesia - gives the familiar dread of isolation and helplessness, while the mechanical setup of the environment makes for challenging but fun interactive puzzles.
Unlike some games, these puzzles don't get boring, but you're constantly fearing the stalking, mechanical monstrosities that echo down the tight metal hallways. While it's not as jumpy as some better known titles, it gets the atmosphere and pacing perfect, so the dread is constant and exhausting – exactly what a survival horror should be.
