5. Problematic Enemy AI - Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
As a DLC spinoff of the original Far Cry 3, we weren't really expecting a lot from Blood Dragon, but what started off as an April Fool's joke turned into a wonderful game concept people were excited to see in action. A conglomeration of everything good, bad, and ugly from 80's media franchises and Far Cry 3's gameplay became one of the best gaming experiences under $20. Since most of the gameplay was ripped directly from Far Cry 3, Blood Dragon became noticed for its own merits. It's one of those games to take your time through, overturning every stone with 80's references and the occasional laugh to truly appreciate its design. However, this doesn't detract from the fact that there were some gameplay flaws. The central gameplay concept of Far Cry 3 was ridding enemy outposts of their inhabitants, therefore freeing it for use by the good guys. This concept is largely the same in Blood Dragon, as taking over outposts is your main objective. These outpost missions are where some aspects tend to fall apart. There are enemy behavior quirks that can only be attributed to problems with AI, as enemies will see things they shouldn't (interfering with plans for stealth), or disappear altogether (prompting confusion in the player). And then there's the Blood Dragon's themselves. The Blood Dragons share the same dissonance problem as hunting in Tomb Raider. In a scene, the dragons are shown to completely decimate enemies. To this end, the build up to actually fighting one is suspenseful, but ultimately unsatisfying when you realize that not only is fighting them repetitive, but also lacking in difficulty.
