A common theme that runs throughout many of the games on this list is that they are often well received by reviewers upon release but lack the commercial success to back this up. Psychonauts is probably the biggest embodiment of this principle as it received glowing praise for its writing and originality but unfortunately lacked the commercial success to back up the critical praise.
The zany 3D platformer was lauded for its artistic style and unique level design, as well as featuring an interesting story and diverse cast of characters. The outlandish premise was perhaps a little too much at the time of release, however in the current climate of annual franchise releases and re-skinned sequels it could be a welcome breath of fresh air.
Besides, getting to experience the beautifully detailed world with modern graphics would surely do the platformers original art design the justice that it deserves.
A sequel was announced in 2015 and is set to release this year. If the sequel sells well it may be worth revisiting the original so that new fans can experience where it all began, albeit with a fresh coat of paint.
