10 Cut Fallout Enemies Designed To Give You Nightmares

1. Mantis Shrimp - Cancelled MMO Fallout Online

This is no humble seafood dish.

In the early '00s, Interplay Publishing envisioned an online Fallout game; a huge world of around 65000 square miles full of new characters, loot, and enemies, long before Fallout 76.

One of those enemies would have been a huge mutated mantis shrimp. Like many of the aquatic creatures in Far Harbour, the mantis shrimp would have inhabited coastline caves. Covered in an armoured shell and bearing massive front claws, it would have been a formidable foe. The mantis shrimp also sported a large set of 'fake eyes', meant to distract enemies away from its real, much more vulnerable eyestalks (which give real mantis shrimp the best eyesight of any creature on earth.)

Mantis shrimp have a secondary set of front legs that can be used to either spear or club prey; in the real world these shrimp, despite their small size, can punch fast enough to heat the water around them to nearly the temperature of the sun for a split second. In promotional materials for Fallout Online, a mutated mantis shrimp punched through Brotherhood power armour with no effort.

Of all the nightmarish creatures in the Fallout world, the mantis shrimp may well have proven to be the most frightening. It didn't take experimentation or FEV to make it an alpha predator, it just needed to grow.

Deathclaw vs Mantis Shrimp, anyone?
